Russia and EU initiated the policy convergence in the field of environmental protection in spite of the different background situations. The reason for EU interest was formulated in the chapter on “Common challenges of the European continent” of the Common Strategy of the European Union on Russia, which was adopted in Cologne in 1999 – “environment is the common property of the people of Russia and the European Union”.
The interest of Russian Federation, which joined the Dialogue with EU in 90s, has been substantially reduced since recently due to various reasons. It has become especially evident judging upon absence of the environmental issues in the President’s statements, governmental action plans, programs of the political parties and mass-media.
In 2007 RREC launched new strategic activity related to strengthening EU-Russia cooperation within the Dialogue on Environment, which was signed on 10th October 2006.
Within the framework of this, the most important component, тhe RREC implements facilitation of technical assistance to activities of the working sub-groups formed under EU-Russia dialogue on the section 6 (Environment), as well as the Road map on common EU-Russia economic space.
The Centre organized dissemination and discussion at round table and workshops of Short Guidelines on major fields of environmental policy, developed and maintains the web-site "Environmental policy of Russia and EU".
